The Learning Express Goals

The goal of our Early Intervention Preschool is to meet the individual needs of every student in our program and celebrate our preschoolers! Our preschool teachers, therapists, and support staff have big hearts that care for our little minds every day!

Our program specifically provides Early Intervention services to students ages 3-5 years old who reside in the Altoona Area School District and may qualify for speech services, special instruction, occupational therapy, physical therapy, autism initiative supports and services, vision support, and/or hearing support.

Our program-wide PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support) initiatives, provide our young preschool students with a safe, positive, and welcoming learning environment, in which every child can learn and grow!

The Learning Express expectations are:

  • Be Safe
  • Be Responsible
  • Be Respectful

Our History

The AASD Learning Express preschool began in 1990.  The first classroom was led by Cheryl Tyler and co-taught by Susan Barton and was located in the Baker Elementary building. It served as the first preschool prototype for Early Intervention in the AASD and served a total of 24 students in two different sessions. In 1991, the AASD Learning Express program relocated to the Curtin building and resumed there for 12 years. In 2013, our Early Intervention program expanded and moved into the former Washington-Jefferson building. To date, the AASD Learning Express program enrolls over 350 children ages 3-5 years old each year.
