Classrooms

Students in the 5-day classrooms work on various skills throughout their 2.5-hour session. Students can attend either a morning session or an afternoon session.

During this time, students work on social-emotional development, cognitive skills, Kindergarten readiness skills, motor development, routines, and procedures. During the day, students will be engaged in large-group activities, small-group instruction, and independent practice. Group instruction works on themes, letters/sounds, numbers/shapes, book handling, scientific concepts, and fine motor skills.

Teachers are highly qualified and skilled AASD employees who focus on instilling a love of learning and strong foundation skills in order to be successful in Kindergarten.  Differentiated instruction and adaptations are provided on an individual basis.  Classrooms are comprised of students with and without IEPs with varying disabilities.

Students enrolled in a 2/3 day classroom at the AASD Learning Express are 3-4 years old and attend preschool half days on either Tuesday/Thursday or Monday/Wednesday/Friday. Because this setting is typically a child’s first experience in school, we primarily focus on teaching routines, independence, social-emotional skills, and following directions to complete preschool concept activities.

Skills introduced in a 2/3 day classroom:
  1. Following Routines – managing transitions, walking in line, sitting in a circle, completing small group tasks, following adult directions
  2. Independence - toileting, hand-washing, hanging up/packing up belongings
  3. Social/emotional skills – PATHS lessons, sharing, taking-turns
  4. Foundational preschool skills - fine motor skills, colors, letters, and sorting
*Students have the opportunity to work on preschool readiness skills in a full-day classroom. Students attend from 9 am-3 pm each day. They have the opportunity to experience breakfast and lunch daily in the cafeteria.

The Autism Initiative classroom is dedicated to teaching children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. The instruction focuses on teaching the right skills in an effective sequence and with systematic methods.

Each child is evaluated using the VB MAPP assessment. This is followed by a program that is differentiated for each child. This program is monitored, adjusted, and verified through reliable student-level data. Each learner has a 15-minute session for manding and a 15-minute session for intensive teaching. Coaches from PaTTAN are typically in the classroom once a month to assist classroom staff with any questions/concerns they may have.
